Inspired by Dorothea Lange’s photo essays, “Los Perros de Concepción” documents the homeless canines in Concepción, Chile. Homelessness is as prominent a concern in Concepcion as it is in my previous residence, Baltimore. In Chile, however, the issue primarily afflicts dogs and is evident in the packs that freely roam the city. They are a common sight across South America, and their symbiotic relationship with the residents is unique from an outsider’s perspective. 2011 |

The most violent since 1960, a 8.8 magnitude earthquake, struck Concepción, Chile on February 27, 2010. Thousands of people lost their homes and hundreds their lives in the natural disaster. Several prominent buildings were demolished and the sidewalks and roadways still live to tell the tale. Yet, temblors, or small tremors, are a part of nearly weekly life in Concepción. “Los Terremotos”, or earthquakes in English, are a difficult cultural phenomenon to explain. In this piece, I attempt to portray their complexity and intertwinement in Chilean culture. 2011 |
